School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

For students not wanting to move into further education upon graduation, a school based apprenticeship or traineeship is a viable option.  Students no longer have to leave school to take up an apprenticeship or traineeship but can have it incorporated as part of their high school curriculum.  By undertaking a school based apprenticeship or traineeship, students can:

• engage in industry training of their choice
• establish the foundations for their future careers
• gain more confidence
• get a head start in the workforce as opposed to those who have not undertaken a school based apprenticeship or

   traineeship
• earn a wage whilst still at school!

As an added bonus, school based apprentices and trainees attract 100% User Choice funding, which means the government covers the total amount of the training whilst they are still at school.  School based apprentices and trainees also offer employers an attractive alternative when looking for staff.

Any high school students wanting to obtain further information on school based apprentices and trainees should talk with their High School first.

Existing Workers

Employers interested in upskilling their existing workers through an apprenticeship or traineeship may be able to access funding through the User Choice program if the occupation is listed on the Queenslands Skills Shortage List as Priority One.  To find out if your employee is eligible, please contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre or visit www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au

What is User Choice?

User Choice is government funding allocated to assist apprentices and trainees with the training component of their apprenticeship or traineeship.  User Choice allows employers the flexibility to “choose” their preferred  Supervising Registered Training Organisation to deliver the training component.  Once an employer has chosen their preferred Supervising Registered Training Organisation, the User Choice funding is allocated to assist in covering the costs involved with undertaking the training.  The skills shortages within an industry determines the amount of User Choice funding that can be accessed for training.  In some cases, the funding can cover 100% of the total training component.
