MINING TRAINING INFORMATION
|
CHANGES: (more information detailed below)
Due to the introduction of Standard 11: Training in coal mines, there is a minimum standard of competency training which is made up of 6 units of competency. This training includes onsite experience prior to gaining a statement of attainment.
GIQ New Entrants will be required to undergo training and assessment with the RTO in the 6 units of competency. The theoretical and practical component of this course is 4 days in duration and requires the participant to complete additional night time reading of course material. Upon completion of this component of the training the new entrants will receive a statement of attendance, and a new entrants passport from Kinetic Group (formerly MI Skills). New entrants will be issued with a logbook to gain experience in a mine site. The participant will only be issued with a statement of attainment when he/she has completed all theoretical and practical components of the course, completed the work experience logbook on a mine site and deemed competent by the trainer/assessor.
Please note, even with Generic Induction Training provided by an RTO, participants may still need to undergo site specific training when commencing with a mine site to ensure that she/he is aware of the policies, procedures and systems of that particular site.
Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2001
Part 11 Training
83 New coal mine worker not to carry out task until induction training completed
(1) A person starting work at a coal mine must not carry out any task at the mine unless the person has completed induction training for the mine
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a task carried out by the person in the course of the induction training.
Even with training conducted by an RTO and site experience the SSE (site senior executive) of the mine site where the participant is to commence work has the obligation to ensure the safety and health of persons who may be affected by coal mining operations. This means they may validate the training that has been carried out by the RTO and provide additional training to ensure that the new entrant is competent to perform their duties.
Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999: reprint 4 April 2011
Part 3
42 Obligations of site senior executive for coal mine
(e) to train coal mine workers so that they are competent to perform their duties

Issuing of GIQ Passport:
An interim generic induction passport is issued prior to the issue of a passport from the Kinetic Group (formally Mining Industry Skills Centre).
Once you receive your Generic Induction passport, it will be valid for two (2) years, after which cardholders will need to book in for a shorter refresher course in order to renew their passports and update their knowledge of any new regulations since obtaining their initial passport.
