Language Literacy & Numeracy Policy

Sun Coast Training & Accreditation specialises in construction and resources related courses. These include machinery operation and high risk training. Due to the nature of the training at Sun Coast Training & Accreditation it is necessary for the students to have at least a basic level of Language comprehension, Literacy(ability to write effectively for purpose intended) and numeracy skills. These levels vary for different courses and training programs.

LLN identification and recommendation is carried out over varying levels of operation from enrolment to completion. Students LLN capabilities may be initially determined by student disclosure or by staff concerns. If either of these initial informal assessments are made it is important to determine the students’ level of capability. STCA initial assessment may include either the 30 second “TASKFORCE” test, the short LLN test on the enrolment sheet and/or the short test in the course specific materials. At this stage the staff member will determine if the level of ‘help’ needed is assistance only and how this will be supplied. This will be carried out using the Language, Literacy & Numeracy Identification and Action Form.

If the Staff member is unsure of the students level of skill or she/he believes that the student may need more than basic assistance, the staff member may chose to complete the appropriate LLN NRS indicator criteria as a guide towards recommendation. This will assist the staff member to determine the students LLN level. A level may be made for the area identified i.e. reading, writing, oral communication, learning strategies & numeracy. These are used as a guide and are not binding. The levels are as follows

1 advanced needs – student will need LLN training by outside training provider – will most probably not be able to complete course with level of skill held

2 medium needs – student may need some LLN training by outside training provider but will need varying levels of classroom support and assistance and may need some one on one course work delivery and/or modified delivery and/or assessment. Student may need in class support person.

3 basic needs – student may need minor assistance in the class room or completing task work. Student may need modified delivery and/or assessment. Student may need in class support person

From this a recommendation can be made to the student. These may include but are not limited to; possible LLN training, LLN programs that may assist, class room support person, Change in print or delivery of course materials etc. Support and program information can be found at the local community/neighbourhood Centre, the Reading and Writing Hotline on 1 300 655 506, TAFE, Centrelink as well as private consultants and training providers. SCTA will assist in locating the appropriate body where possible.

NOTE: NRS – National Reporting System on NNL is a government initiative and is used by SCTA as a guideline only in determining students LLN levels. SCTA does not provide LLN training under the NRS programme and are not NRS training suppliers. Our core business is construction training, and we strive to assist students in achieving the best outcomes from students course training with SCTA.
