OHSCER218A Perform Dogging Operations


DG    Dogger includes selection or inspection of lifting gear and the slinging and movement of loads handled by the crane.

Course Description


This unit of competency has been developed in accordance with the licensing and assessment requirements of (NOHSC:1006 [2001])

The Dogging Course is a prerequisite for undertaking the Basic Rigger Course.

This Course is designed around the role of the Dogger which is to:

  • plan and prepare the work;
  • select the correct equipment to support the load during lifting;
  • issue instructions to the crane operator on the movement and positioning of the load;
  • ensure correct positioning of the load;
  • removal of slings and lifting accessories;
  • checking of all equipment before and after use.

Course Duration


The Course is of 40 nominal hours duration, of which the first 3 days are training and the 4th day is the practical and written assessment.

Please note that it is a requirement for participants to produce 120 hours of signed log book (on-the-job) training as a Dogger.  Log book to be signed by a Licenced Dogger.

Alternatively a letter from your employer and proof of employment may be provided, with the employer stating that you have completed 120 hours of on-the-job training as a Dogger (listing hours and work performed).

The courses are currently held on weekends minimizing the loss of wages during the working week.

Students are required to complete a written and practical assessment and must answer all questions correctly to be deemed competent to receive their Statement of Attainment and Licence.

At the successful completion of this competency students will receive a Statement of Attainment. Please refer to the home page for advice on the Licencing procedure.

Course Requirements


  • Students are required to be 18 years or over;
  • Students are to wear closed in shoes (steel caps);
  • Students must have a basic understanding of mathematics (must be able to work out formulas for loads and safe working loads of steel wire rope, synthetic rope and chains).

Students must bring:


  • log book (120 hours on-the-job training, signed by a licensed dogger);
  • a calculator (with square root function);
  • hard hat;
  • whistle;
  • safety vest and equipment;
  • Drivers Licence (photo identification is required).
