(OHSCER218A Perform Dogging Operations)
Course Overview
This course covers the functions required to perform dogging operations including selection or inspection of lifting gear and the slinging movement of loads handled by the crane.
OHSCER218A Perform Dogging Operations has been developed in accordance with the licensing and assessment requirements of (NOHSC:1006 [2001]) and is a prerequisite for undertaking the Basic Rigger Course.
This Course is designed around the role of the Dogger which is to:
- plan and prepare the work;
- select the correct equipment to support the load during lifting;
- issue instructions to the crane operator on the movement and positioning of the load;
- ensure correct positioning of the load;
- removal of slings and lifting accessories;
- checking of all equipment before and after use
Entry Requurements

students are required to be 18 years or over;

students are to wear closed in shoes (stell caps);

students must have a basic understanding of mathematics (must be able to work out formulas for loads and safe working loads of steel wire rope, synthetic rope and chains).
Licensing Regulations
Section 18 and Section 25 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 mandates who has the authority to perform high risk work and earthmoving or particular crane occupations. Both sections require the operator to be either a licence or certificate holder, or a trainee.

Section 31 of the Regulation mandates that a person is a trainee if they are receiving formal training and informal learning in an earthmoving or particular crane occupation or high risk work, under a training plan and log book.
As such, without a training plan and log book, the person is not considered a trainee. Accordingly, if the person does not hold the relevant licence or certificate, and is not a trainee, the person and his employer are in breach of the regulation. |
Course Duration
The is a 4 day course, of which the first 3 days are training and the 4th day is the practical and written assessment.
Courses are available mid week and on weekends.
Students are required to complete a written and practical assessment and must answer all questions correctly to be deemed competent to receive their Statement of Attainment and Licence.
Students must bring
- a calculator (with square root function);
- hard hat;
- whistle;
- safety vest and equipment;
- Drivers Licence (photo identification is required).
- Log book (if the student already has one)
Fees and Charges
The Course fee of $800 is payable at commencement of the course.

Licensing Regulations
Upon successful completion of the unit, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
Participants will be issued with the Licence Application Form for High Risk Licences which must be submitted at an Australia Post outlet accompanied by a $72 licence application fee.
